TOMONOBU KORO TRIPODE AU SHISHI EN FAÏENCE... - Lot 2018 - Iegor
FINE SATSUMA TRIPOD KORO DECORATED IN KINRAN COLORS WITH SHISHI FINIAL JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD, SIGNED With a globular body, resting on three feet with applied masks, with upraised handles, topped by a lid with a spectacular Shishi finial molded in the round; adorned in Kinran colors with two medallions painted with phoenixes (ho-o) on a ground covered all over with paulownia flowers and scrolls. Signed on the exterior of the cover. This piece is a marvellous example of a Shishi, an animal that has its origins in Chine mythology (see Foo dogs). These dogs are notably characterized by their fierced expressions and busy tails. A good comparison would be a koro by CHIN Jukan to be found at page 170 in the catalog of the retrospective exhibition held in Paris in 2010. Publication: LAWRENCE, Louis. Satsuma The Romance of Japan. Morven Gray / Meiji Satsuma Publications: California, USA, November 2011, p. 162.
