KORO EN FORME DE KINKO CHEVAUCHANT LA CARPE... - Lot 2007 - Iegor
FINE SATSUMA KORO MODELLED AS KINKO RIDING THE GIANT CARP JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD, CIRCA 1870-1880 Modelled as a carp jumping out of water and ridden by an old man wearing a scholar's cap and holding a scroll; enhanced with polychrome and gilt enamels. Satsuma wares were often decorated with subjects taken from popular legends. This koro is a good illustration of the story of Kinko, an artist who painted fish but refused to eat them. To thank him the Dragon King invited him to visit his submarine palace. Our hero is depicted on his way back, at the time he emerged from the ocean. Publication: LAWRENCE, Louis. Satsuma The Romance of Japan ?. Morven Gray / Meiji Satsuma Publications: California, USA, November 2011, p. 130.
