PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Lot 6
PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Originally from Middle Sepik, the yam mask is used to disguise the beautiful yams at harvest and had to be burned after their consumption in the community. Braided from plant fiber and coated with natural pigments, each mask personifies the yam which has sacred value and could not be sold. Theoretically, the mask should be burned at the same time as the yam was cooked. The yam is the sacred tuber throughout Melanesia. Its cultivation, harvest and its consumption was accompanied by prohibitions and strict laws.
