PAPUA NEW GUINEA
This mask, called Baba Tagwa, Abelam culture of Middle Sepik, is a helmet used during secret ceremonies, particularly during initiatory rituals of the transition of young boys to adulthood. These masks with avian features, made of fine woven basketry, are enhanced with natural pigments. Babas are worn with fiberglass skirts pandanus, flower necklace and a spear to ward off the uninitiated.
